While learning German you tend to come across some wonderful compound words, which more often than not are actually all very sensible and logical, albeit in a fairly amusing way. Take the German for gloves, which is ‘Handschuhe’ for instance…
And so, here are a few more German words that at first glance don’t immediately make sense to me.
(For the non-German speakers, all I can recommend is to put these words (and their component parts) through a translator (Deepl is the best) to experience the same glee I do when discovering wonderfully sensible German words)
Enjoy!
And that’s it for this week! If you’re new here and want more of this kind of nonsense in your inbox each Friday, be sure to sign up here:
(There’s both Free and Paid subscription options - I’d recommend picking Free, but if you feel like supporting the publication, by all means hit the Paid option!)
And of course, please do feel free to share this, especially to your German friends.
Danke! See you all next week.
Büstenhalter always amused me. Very precise. And if you speak French, those crazy French explorers coming up with Grand Tetons is something that's worth a raised eyebrow!
I am learning Dutch and I related so much... SOS
